🎨 The history of Spirituality in Art
From ancient cave paintings to altars and murals, spirituality in art has always played a sacred role. The earliest spiritual art examples can be found in prehistoric caves like Lascaux, with animals and symbols possibly tied to rituals and deeper beliefs. Ancient civilizations like Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece, and Rome filled their temples with art meant to honor gods and express their cosmologies.
In the Renaissance, artists like Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci infused their creations with a sense of the divine, exploring what it means to be human in relation to something greater. Later, in the 19th and 20th centuries, spirituality found new forms in abstraction. Movements like Expressionism and Symbolism emerged, inspired by spiritualism, mysticism, and esoteric thought, the foundation of what we now see as soul spiritual art.
One groundbreaking exhibition, The Spiritual in Art: Abstract Painting 1890–1985, held in 1986 at the LACMA in Los Angeles, explored how artists like Kandinsky and Rothko used color and form to express the ineffable. They weren’t painting what they saw; they were painting what they felt.
Creating spiritual art, whether painting, mixed media collage art, or sculpture becomes a kind of meditation. It’s a spirituality artwork practice, a dialogue between the artist and the invisible. And for the viewer, art becomes a mirror. A moment of pause. A whisper of connection.
Your home can become your sacred space. Decorating your walls with spiritual wall art is a way to invite peace, power, and presence into your everyday life. Your walls can remind you of who you truly are.
✂️ The Soul of Handmade Collage: A Spiritual Art Practice
My journey with art began around 2009, in a sun-drenched house in the South of France. I discovered my first Vogue magazine, captivated by the photography, the textures, the storytelling. I felt the urge to preserve that beauty, to turn it into something new. So I cut, layered, rearranged & made my first collage on a textbook (or “agenda” as we call it in France). It was the beginning of my love story with collage art.
By 2010, I was creating collages on canvas, using only paper from old magazines. Each element is chosen intuitively and arranged by hand, no tech. Just scissors, glue, and intention. I would spend hours fine-tuning each layer until the composition felt right.
Over time, this practice became a spiritual experience. I began to see it not just as craft, but as spirituality artwork, a way to infuse intention, energy, and symbolic meaning into a visual form. It’s alive and layered.
Unlike digital art or AI-generated visuals, handcrafted collage art holds human energy. You can feel the emotion behind every cut and placement. You’re not just decorating your home, you’re bringing in something that has soul.
🖼 How to Choose Spiritual Art for Your Home?
Ask yourself:
- What kind of energy do I want to wake up to?
- Do I want to keep staring at empty white walls?
- Or am I ready to surround myself with art that feels like me?
Do you crave softness? Boldness? A reminder to play? A whisper from your inner child?
The artwork “Guardian angel” was created to speak directly to that part of you, the fearless inner child who once danced without shame, created without rules, and felt every moment with intensity and color.
In a world of fast content, AI images, and digital perfection, choosing handmade spiritual art is a quiet rebellion. It's a return to meaning, feelings, & humanity!
